The fascinating work of Travis Louie

It’s time for another artist we’ve been wanting to feature for a long time now. Travis Louie is a New York-based artist who creates these black and white paintings inspired by Victorian times and vintage photography. In a statement by the artist, his work “is inhabited by human oddities, mythical beings, and otherworldly characters who appear to have had their formal portraits taken to mark their existence and place in society. The underlining thread that connects all these characters is the unusual circumstances that shape who they were and how they lived.” The strange characters inhabiting his paintings isn’t the only interesting thing about his work, so is his technique. Building on top of a graphite drawing, Travis creates a very smooth and polished finish, using layer upon layer of transparent acrylic washes. The finished pieces are odd, dreamlike and very beautiful.
