Taiwanese illustrator, Hsiao-Ron Cheng, is the newest artist featured on Beautiful Surface. I stumbled across her work a little while ago and fell in love immediately. Her use of cool, neutral colors is subtle and sets the mood for the overall experience, which I can best describe as a quiet melancholy. Her paintings usually depict pale skinned children whose appearance is slightly unnerving. Their large, glassy eyes are mournfully diverted in order to avoid direct eye contact with the viewer, while others have their eyes completely obscured by flower petals. I will not be so presumptuous as to speak to their meaning. That is for the artist to say and the viewer to determine on their own. I hope that your experience viewing her work is as enjoyable as mine was.
