The complex little creatures of Jana Brike

These blonde haired, blue-eyed characters who are clearly neither children nor adults, but with features of both are the creation of Latvian artist, Jana Brike. These complex little creatures stare out of her canvases with inquisitive and at times, mischievous expressions that are both inviting and unnerving at the same time. Jana began her path to becoming an artist very early, apparently declaring at age five that she would be a painter when she grew up. By age 11 she had begun her professional training at an art school, painting upwards of five hours a day. She lists a wide range and breadth of inspiration to include her cultural background, personal experiences, Renaissance paintings, and fairy tale illustrations to name just a few. She is a huge and intriguing talent that we will almost certainly be hearing a lot about in the future.
